  • How a 2ºC temperature increase would affect the olive tree?

An average temperature increase of 2º C until 2050 would affect olive groves and only the picual variety could maintain yields in dry land in interior cultivation areas. This follows from the first informative study on the evolution of the climate and its impacts on crops such as olive groves, among others, presented by COAG, a farmers' organization.

In the case of the olive tree, this report indicates that, despite the fact that it is a drought-tolerant species, the availability of water is considered an important resource to improve and stabilize the final yield.

Although the olive tree is considered one of the most suitable and best adapted species to the Mediterranean climate, increased warming, drought and other extreme weather events such as heat waves can have effects on the ecology and physiology of olive cultivation.

These phenomena associated with climate change could have a significant impact on the distribution of olive varieties, as well as on their growth and productivity.
