The Unicode Consortium has announced this week the 117 new emojis that will be incorporated into our phones in 2020, among which a symbol of our Mediterranean Diet and Spanish gastronomy finally stands out: the olive.

Emojis are pictograms that are mainly used in chats or social networks and that emulate moods, food, animals, means of transport, flags. There are currently around 2,800 emojis.

In order to include new emojis in this list, the Unicode Consortium opens a call for proposals every year. In the case of the olive, the proposal highlights the consumption and use of this product since ancient times, as well as its symbolic and historical connotations.

It also highlights that it is a basic ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine, is known worldwide for its unique shape and taste, and is the fruit of the olive tree, widely grown throughout the world.

But it also highlights, for example, that the "olive" hashtag has more than two million publications on the Instagram social network.

"The emoji Olive would be used to a great extent by chefs and lovers of gastronomy and Mediterranean cuisine; and it could be used in combination with other emojis to express a diversity of dishes or prepared drinks", the proposal states.

The design of the emojis images presented by this consortium are just one example, since mobile phone, PC and web platform providers usually adapt them to their design afterwards.

For example, here is the proposal from emojipedia.org

The new emojis generally begin to appear on mobile phones in the months of September or October, although some platforms may launch them earlier.
