A thesis defended at the University of Jaén (UJA) highlights the benefits of organic EVOO for the mother during the lactation period. This is the main conclusion that emerges from the thesis entitled "Application of organic extra virgin olive oil in pain, cracks in the nipple and duration of breastfeeding" , defended by Irene Agea Cano and directed by Dr. Manuel Linares Abad and Dr. María José Calero García, professors of the Nursing Department.

The main objective of this study was to demonstrate whether organic EVOO has beneficial effects in the prevention and treatment of pain and cracks in the nipple of women during breastfeeding and on the duration of breastfeeding, compared to expressed breast milk.

The clinical trial was carried out at the Hospital San Juan de la Cruz of Úbeda from January 2017 to December 2017. The sample consisted of 126 women, who had full-term delivery, of legal age, who began breastfeeding after the delivery and signed informed consent. The participants were assigned to the experimental group (organic EVOO) or control (breast milk) by stratified randomization by age intervals. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Jaén.

The author of the thesis highlights that applying organic EVOO is just as effective as breast milk in treating nipple cracks, being more effective in primiparous women. The application of organic extra virgin to the nipple was just as effective in controlling pain compared to the application of expressed breast milk.

The highest incidence of cracks in the nipple occurs in the first week of follow-up after delivery in both groups. Nipple pain is frequent and severe, especially in the first week after delivery in both groups. Although with a minimal statistical difference, the probability of the appearance of cracks is lower with the application of organic EVOO”, Irene Agea has indicated.

Regarding the duration of breastfeeding, in primiparous women, the duration was similar between those who applied organic EVOO and those who applied expressed breast milk. The early initiation of breastfeeding during the first two hours after delivery can prevent the appearance of cracks in the nipple. Education about breastfeeding during pregnancy increases the duration of it.

The midwife and doctor Irene Agea emphasizes that, with this research, mothers who may have a problem when manipulating their nipples to express milk are offered an equally valid alternative to prevent and treat cracks and pain in the nipple, the organic extra virgin olive oil. "In this way, we contribute to reducing the rates of abandonment of breastfeeding and to prolonging its duration, as recommended by the World Health Organization and UNICEF", the researcher has indicated.
