The Castillo de Canena International award for Olive Research 'Luis Vañó' aims to promote and stimulate scientific and technological knowledge, in the field of research on olive groves and olive oils.
This initiative, which began in 2011, is part of the different activities carried out by the company Castillo de Canena in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility in order to stimulate greater knowledge and research within the Spanish and international olive and olive sector, with the support of the University of Jaén and the University of California at Davis (UC Davis) of the United States.
The delivery of the IV International Prize Castillo de Canena of Research olive oil 'Luis Vañó', endowed with 6,000 euros and plaque accrediting or will take place the month of April, in the Castle of Canena.
The winning work is about a natural metabolic-epigenetic inhibitor of the tumor stem cells present in extra virgin olive oil. The authors of this work are Antonio Segura Carretero, Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Granada and coordinator of scientific research at the Technological Center for Research and Development of Functional Food (CIDAF) and Javier A. Menéndez, researcher at the Biomedical Research Institute of Girona (IDIBGI)-Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO). The jury, composed of representatives of both university institutions, has highlighted both the quality and the number of papers presented, a total of fifteen in this fourth edition.
In this sense, the Rector of the University of Jaén, Juan Gómez Ortega, has highlighted the international nature of this award, 'which edition after edition allows more works to be submitted to it', as well as the variety of topics on the who have been versed, such as the environment, quality of oils or health, scope of the latter to which the winning study belongs and which 'brings new results on the benefits of extra virgin olive oil consumption against cancer'.
For his part, the executive director of the University of California at Davis, Dan Flynn, referred in particular to the winning work to highlight that 'it offers an exciting evidence of a new type of phytochemicals in extra virgin olive oil, which promise a successful treatment to fight cancer without having the toxicity present in other treatments currently available’.
